The Mekong River is one of the worlds major rivers. It is the worlds 6th longest river and the 3rd longest in Asia. The Mekong River passes through more countries than any other river in Asia. It begins in the Jifu Mountains of Qinghai Province, at an altitude of more than 5,000 metres. It is 4,909 km long and in China it is called the Lancang River, which is 2,198 km. The river runs south until it leaves China in Yunnan Province and then changes its name to the Mekong River, which continues to flow 2,711 km through Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam.
