On the Embodiment of Humanism of Renaissance in Shakespeares A Midsummer Nights Dream 曹丽丹 1009班 Abstract:The Renaissance refers to a cultural movement which rises in Italy city at the end of thirteenth Century , later extended to Western European countries, becoming ideological in Europe in sixteenth Century. Humanism is the instructional idea of the Renaissance.It provoked important new ideas about humans themselves.For the first time in their lives and in human history ,people became aware of the importance of the individual man such as freedom ,happiness;for the first time in their history ,human could live for themselves .During the Renaissance ,there has been a lot of famous literary works.One is the Shakespeares A Midsummer Nights Dream which a romantic love comedy , portraying the adventures of four young Athenian lovers and a group of amateur actors in a moonlit forest, and their interactions with the fairies who inhabit it and Duke of the Athenians. Key words:Renaissance,Humanism,freedom,happiness,love Ⅰ Introduction A Midsummer Nights Dream is one of most popular and widely performed play across the world of William Shakespeare who is presumably the most accomplished writer during the Renaissance ,producing altogether 37 plays and over 100poems throughout his writing career.The play describes a pair of lovers Hemiya and Lysander in the Athens city .Hemiyas father, Egeus opposed them together and ask Hemiya to marry his chosen man,Demetrius.But Hemiya refuses it so that Egeus asked the Duke ordered, if Hemiya wont marry Demetrius ,she must face death or single lifetime under Theseus an ancient Athenian law. Hermia and her lover Lysander therefore decide to elope by escaping through the forest at night.
