(5) In-process and post-process gaging and inspection of machined workpieces are now features of machining centers. (6) These machines are relatively compact and highly automated and have advanced control systems, so one operator can attend to two or more machining centers at the same time, thus reducing labor costs. Selection and Innovation of Machining Centers The selection of the type and size of machining centers depends on several factors, especially: (1) Type of products, their size, and their shape complexity; (2) Type of machining operations to be performed, and the type and number of cutting tools required; (3) Dimensional accuracy required; (4) Production rate required. Machining center innovations and developments have brought about the following improvements: (1) Improved flexibility and reliability; (2) Increased feeds, speeds, and overall machine construction and rigidity; (3) Reduced loading, tool-changing, and other non-cutting time; (4) Greater MCU (machine control unit) capability and compatibility with systems; (5) Reduced operator involvement; (6) Improved safety features and less noise.
