Chapter 4 Structure and Function of the Cell Introduction to the cell In 1665, the English scientist Robert Hooke used a microscope to examine a thin slice of cork. He said it consisted of “tiny little boxes”. These boxes reminded him of the place where monks lived, therefore, he called them cells. What he actually looked at were dead plant cells. The first person to look at live cells was a Dutch scientist and microscope maker by the name of Anton van Leeuwenhoek.
