Reading Writing, reading for fun of Unit 1, model3, NSEC
Teaching analysis:
In this period, the teaching emphasis will be put on developing students’ reading ability by reading extensively. The way I plan to deal with the passage will be different from detailed reading since the passage “A sad love story” is the second reading material in the unit. Developing students reading strategies will be the focus.
While reading, get students learn to use some reading strategies such as skimming, scanning, and so on. How to find specific is the soul of reading.
As to new words and phrases, the teacher can first find these students feel most difficult and help them to understand.
The purpose of “A sad love story” is to introduce a cross-cultural view of lovers’ festival-Qiqiao Festival and Valentine’s Day. It’s set in a present-day context that students can relate to, and respond to.
The teacher can first talk about the two festivals and the characters to lead the topic and then ask students to read the passage and do some comprehending exercises. While checking their answers with the whole class, deal with the language problems students can’t work out by themselves.
This is an extensive reading lesson, so the learning of languages points should not be the key part. Help students develop reading skills is helping them in a bigger picture.
Important points:
Students develop reading skills by extensive reading;
Students read and understand the passage.
Difficult points:
Students learn to use reading strategies such as skimming, scanning and so on.
Students understand foreign culture and compare the two festivals about love.
Teaching aims:
Students learn some useful new words and expressions in this part, e.g. apologize, drown, sadness, wipe, weep, remind, forgive, turn up, keep one’s word, hold one’s breath, set off, etc.
