The “SEX – AGE – KILL” Method of Estimating Wisconsin’s Deer Population Since the early 1960’s, DNR wildlife managers and researchers have used what is known as the “Sex-Age-Kill” (SAK) method to estimate deer populations. This method was developed here in Wisconsin to supplement a number of other population surveys such as deer pellet and trail counts which were used to estimate deer numbers. SAK has since become the principle method for monitoring Wisconsin deer herds. The SAK formula is constantly being fine-tuned as deer populations and harvest methods change. Over the years, SAK
