TENS!
TENS! is a class greeting activity. TENS! is an acronym for Touch, Establish Eye Contact, Use the Person’s Name, and Smile! Ask students to meet and greet their classmates as they enter the classroom each day. TENS! is a good classroom mixer and an opportunity for students to come to know each other as members of a learning community.
Add cross-cultural greeting rituals to TENS! for a diversity experience. Ask students from diverse cultural backgrounds to share their cultural greetings. Encourage students to investigate the work of cultural anthropologists such as Desmond Morris and bring “New Ways to Greet the World” to class.
Goals: Engagement, Classbuilding
Notes for Implementation:
Digging for Diamonds and Diving for Pearls
“You can pick lemons off of trees, but you have to dig for diamonds and dive for pearls.”
This focused listing strategy helps student personalize instruction. Ask students to prepare a two-column worksheet. Or, prepare a worksheet as a class handout. Label the top of the first column as “Tips and Tools” or “Key Concepts.” Label the top of the second column as “Ways I Can Use.” These two columns become the framework for focused listing of concepts and uses.
As instruction proceeds ask students to record key concepts in the first column. Ask students to also note a way they think they might use the concept in their own lives in the second column. Provide class time for students to reflect on the lesson. Provide time for students to turn-to-a-partner and share their “Diamonds and Pearls.” Close the lesson or the class by asking students to share their “Diamonds and Pearls” with the entire class.
Instructors can use the Digging for Diamonds and Diving for Pearls strategy as a classroom assessment technique to aid in development and refinement of key ideas for instruction.
Goals: Mastery, Application, Classroom Assessment
