Karen Blixen was born on April 17, 1885, to parents who were vaguely connected with the Danish aristocracy in northern Denmark. She was long interested in writing, and published a few short stories at age twenty-two under the name, Osceola. It was after having stayed on her coffee farm in Ngong for seventeen years then returned home and was living with her family that Dinesen began to write earnestly. She adopted the pen name, Isak Dinesen, the term Isak being the Hebrew word for one who laughs. (SparkNotes)Her first collection in English was?Seven Gothic Tales?published in 1934, which secured Dinesens reputation under her new name and was well received in both America and England. In 1935 and 1936, Dinesen wrote?Out of Africa,?which was an immediate success. Her later publications include Winter Tales?in 1942,?Last Tales?in 1957, and?Shadows in the Grass?in 1961. She died in 1962 in?Runstedlund. Isak Dinesen longed to be a storyteller,?as she once expressed in an interview, her true ambition was to “tell stories, beautiful stories.” The book of Out of Africa is not written strictly according to the traditional chronological sequence, but is in an anecdotal fashion, made up of many stories pertaining to certain people on the farm or even some wild animals in Africa she had came across during her stay in Africa, which is a semblance of the Arabian Nights narrated by Scherherzade.?The whole novel is made up of five parts, which are respectively “Kamante and Lulu”, “A Shooting Accident on the Farm”, “Visitors to the Farm”, “From an Immigrant’s Notebook”, and “Farewell to the Farm”. The initial four parts present with her evoked admiration of the exotic and original natural sceneries, strapping wild animals that know how to keep absolute silence, and unsophisticated natives thinking and behaving in a particularly original way in Africa
