Step I. Background Information
Manners are the standards of conduct which show the actor to be cultured, polite, and refined. They are like laws in that they codify a set of standards for human behavior; yet they are unlike laws in that there is no formal system for punishing misbehavior. They are a kind of norm.
Step II. Warm-up Questions:
①What changes in manners have taken place according to the article?
A perfectly able woman no longer has to act helplessly in public, and a man can drop the outdated courtesies.
②Why don’t men have to show outdated courtesies to women now?
It is thanks to the women’s liberation.
③Is “my wife” happy with “my custom”? Why?
