Introduction to the student guide to researching and writing your research project This guide will take you step-by-step through the process of researching and writing your research project, offering practical tips and techniques along the way. HOW TO TACKLE YOUR ASSIGNMENT MAKE SURE YOU KNOW WHAT YOURE BEING ASKED TO DO Successful research starts with understanding the question: know what information you need (the topic) and what youre being asked to do with that information (the task). Every question has keywords. These could be dates, places, people, viewpoints, legislation, case law, theories, conditions, services, professional practices. Get to grips with your question topic. Start with an introduction or overview chapter from a course or general textbook, or define terms from subject dictionaries, glossaries and encyclopedias in print and online, like Oxford Reference Online or Gale Virtual Reference Library. There is a big difference between describe and discuss. Get the task wrong and you wont fulfill your assignment brief. The information you find may be good, but youll lose marks if you havent applied it correctly. Dont be frightened to ask your lecturer or Library staff for help and guidance Chapter 2 Planning 2.1How much time to spend on research YOUR GOAL IN SEARCHING FOR JNFORMATION ISNT TO FIND EVERYTHING THERE IS, BUT TO: Find the most useful and relevant information to answer the question youve been assigned. Fulfill the assignment assessment criteria that relate to your wider reading and research sources MANAGE YOUR TIME TO BEST EFFECT,REMEMBER THE FORMULA: What? How long? Finding, reading, summarizing and understanding information. 1/4 of the time Evaluating information and writing your assignment. 1/2 of the time Reviewing and rewriting your assignment. 1/2 of the time Finding, reading, summarizing and understanding information. Search the library catalogue for books matching your keywords. Try to zero in on the most relevant book
