GB2RS NEWS Sunday 10th November 2013 [Note to newsreaders: the editorial team has recently received a comment suggesting that the typeface and font size used for GB2RS news is a little small. We could readily increase the type size and line spacing for the standard script if this would make life easier; the only reason we use the current style is to minimise the amount of paper and ink that Newsreaders require to print the script. If you have any feelings on whether the style could be improved, please email gb2rs@.uk.] The news headlines: Philippines radio amateurs braced for typhoon aftermath FUNcube-1 launch coming up New Zealand amateurs to get 6m in December As this edition of GB2RS went to press, Typhoon Haiyan had just made landfall in the Philippines. Ham emergency radio operators, known locally as HEROs, expect to be busy in the coming days, as the community deals with damage from winds gusting up to 275 kilometres per hour, that’s 170 miles per hour. The Philippines Amateur Radio Association has requested that 7.075MHz should be left clear for emergency communications. Amateurs will be pleased to learn that AMSAT-UK’s FUNcube-1 satellite, which has a 70cm to 2m linear transponder and telemetry data transmitter, will be placed into orbit on 21 November. The satellite will be deployed approximately 16 minutes after lift-off and will extend its antennas and activate the transmitter 10 minutes later. The satellite will initially be in Safe Mode and will transmit its 1200bps BPSK telemetry signal at a power level of approximately 30mW. This is intended to be a very low power mode but should be easily heard and decodable by any station having a steerable Yagi with more than 9 or 10dBi gain. A circularly polarised array will provide the most reliable signals but linear antennas will also perform adequately. The last Channel 1 Television transmitter in New Zealand is due to close down at the end of November. The telecommunications regulator has announce
