State the normal and tangential boundary conditions that have to be satisfied by the electric and magnetic fields at an air-dielectric interface.
[4 marks]
The electrical parameters of dry earth are listed in Table Q2. Determine whether the dry earth is a good conductor or a good dielectric for electromagnetic waves at 1GHz; hence determine an approximate value for the wave impedance of the dry earth.
[6 marks]
A 1GHz electromagnetic wave is generated in air just above the surface of the ground which has the electrical properties of dry earth. If the electromagnetic wave is considered to be a plane wave, at normal incidence to the ground, with an electric field magnitude of 20Vm-1 then determine the following, stating any assumptions that you may make:
a. The magnitude of the electric and magnetic fields of the reflected electromagnetic wave.
[3 marks]
b. The magnitude of both the electric and magnetic fields of the transmitted electromagnetic wave.
[3 marks]
c. The power density of the transmitted electromagnetic wave.

If there is a flat and perfectly conducting surface at a depth of D = 0.1225m below the air-ground interface, then determine D in wavelengths in the dry earth; hence, or otherwise, determine the magnitude of the reflected electric field in the air.
