Introduction
Metaphors, mentioned by George Lakoff Mark Johnson(1980) in Metaphors We Live By, are pervasive in our daily life, happens not only in human’s language but also in human’s thought and behavior. The utilization of metaphors is very frequent in everyday speech. In recent years, more and more scholars had made researches on metaphor. The studies on metaphor in foreign countries have developed a complete system, which is typically represented by George Lakoff Mark Johnson. And the studies on metaphor in China are also influenced by the two. But the translation of metaphor is studied mostly in the field of poetry, literature and rhetoric. Few of them study the translation of English metaphors in everyday speech systematically. The author believes that this thesis is a worthy study, because metaphors are widely used in everyday speech.
Different scholars give metaphor different definitions. They point out more or less the essence of metaphor. The common feature of these definitions is that metaphor is a figure of speech, containing an implicit comparison. Chinese and English are two different languages spoken by two different peoples with different modes of thinking. English metaphors in everyday speech have its own cultural background. And the context is often crucial for understanding metaphors. So the discussion of translation English metaphors is closely related to the cultural background and the context. The criteria are the judgment of translation and the target of translators. The author holds that the translation of English metaphor should follow the criteria of Yan Fu’s three characters. Translating English metaphors properly in everyday speech need a deep discussion in this thesis. The author gives three methods in the translation: (1) Literal Translation; (2) Free Translation; (3) Combination of literal Translation and Free Translation.
