Amy Tan (1952) is an American writer of Chinese descent whose works portray the lives of Chinese-American daughters and their immigrant mothers and explore mother-daughter relationships. In her works, Tan deals with the characters’ conflicting emotions, which are associated with being native-born Americans of Chinese ancestry. In 1993, Tans adaptation of her most popular fiction work, The Joy Luck Club(1989), became a commercially successful film. One of Miller’s modern tragedies is Death of a Salesman (1949), a tale of the life and death of the ordinary working man Willy Loman. Willy is a hard-working and goo-natured salesman who holds firm in his convince about achieving the American dream. His dream is indeed not ambitious. He wants to establish his own business, to pay off the mortgage on his house, to have successful children and live happily and peacefully with his family. Unfortunately, the reality is cruel. He is to be dismissed by the company he has been working for 30 years because he is getting old. His two sons, for whom he has great expectations, turn out to be losers in society, one a thief and the other a braggart. Disillusioned, he desperately killed himself in order to get life insurance money for his family.
