Focus 1: Teach the students to appreciate the value of living in dignity and never to give up in adverse times embodied in the hero of our story who lost his sight in a chemical explosion but struggled beneath handicaps to be a successful, respectable insurance salesman.
Focus 2: Acquaint the students with the personal life and legacy of the great inventor Alfred Nobel as well as the basic information of the Nobel Peace Prize.
b. Key language points in the text
Focus 1: 1. Word conversion such as the adjective yellow which can function both as a verb and as a noun, and synonyms such as insure versus assure, respectful versus respectable, wood versus wooden or alive/live/lively, where the words in each pair or group contain the same stem or root.
2. Understand certain prepositions such as except may govern a noun clause introduced by that.
3. Tense sequences as well as the subjunctive mood.

Focus 1: 19 B-level words, 14 A-level words, and 9 phrases and expressions listed under Vocabulary.
Focus 2: 35 B-level words, 17 A-level words, and 10 phrases and expressions listed under Vocabulary.
d. Comprehensive skills
Understand a passage at the intermediate level of difficulty and on this basis, be able to write a summary of the text.
