Confucius Institute at Portland State University CIPSU’s Mission The Confucius Institute at PSU (CI-PSU), the 11th such institute in the U.S., officially opened on May 16, 2007, after Portland State University signed an agreement in January 2007 with The Office of Chinese Language Council International (Hanban). Portland State’s Confucius Institute is to promote educational exchange and cooperation between the US and the PRC, and jointly develops academic exchange programs with its partner school Soochow University. CI-PSU is a non-degree granting entity that supports community outreach and development of non-degree China area studies and language programs, including events and outreach (in cooperation with other civic organizations) on Chinese language, culture, history, politics, economics, sociology, philosophy and allied areas of scholarship and interest. Additionally, CI-PSU offers short-term courses in cultural awareness and Chinese language training programs for primary and secondary teachers in Oregon and the greater Portland area, hosts regional and international conferences; hosts Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi (HSK/YCT/BCT) Chinese Language Proficiency Tests; organizes high school China summer camps and K-12 school principals to visit China; and, in conjunction with PSU’s International Education Office, develops and promotes curricula for study abroad programs in China. The CI-PSU is rapidly becoming an important window for the local community and the general public in the region to learn about China and Chinese culture.
