Under this law it is illegal for any vessel to dump plastic garbage anywhere in the ocean or navigable waters. Violations of these requirements may result in civil penalties being imposed upon offenders in the form of fines and/or imprisonment, as determined by current national legislation.Maintain Company’s Garbage Manual Record Book and record disposal of plastics ashore. When plastics are incinerated on board retain ‘Clinkers’ for disposal ashore. Garbage includes all kinds of victual, domestic and operational waste generated during the normal operation of the ship and liable to be disposed of continuously or periodically except those substances which are defined or listed in other Annexes of MARPOL 73/78. When waste is mixed the more stringent requirements apply. Disposal into the sea of food wastes shall be made as far as practicable from land, but in any case not less than 12 miles from the nearest land. (Always inform Bridge OOW and confirm vessel is in an area where disposal into sea is permitted.) OBO’s, dry bulk and general cargo vessels should note that cargo residues are considered as garbage and must not be discharged in special areas.
