Two standard methods for investigating relaxation processes in solids — deep level transient spectroscopy (DLTS) and thermostimulated depolarization method (TSD) are analyzed. A complex formalism is introduced and numerically analyzed. Related features were revealed including a direct reflection of the shape of an arbitrary distribution of relaxation times by the DLTS/TSD response. The extraordinary resolution ability of the so-called step heating TSD is numerically demonstrated. A discussion is given of a new approach to the analysis of the DLTS spectra as well as TSD currents due to differen
