GB_WK1_16_ProcCap_V2 Module 2.5 Process Capability You Are Here Goals Know basic methods for assessing process capability Understand the properties of a Normal Curve that are important to process capability calculations Know how to use the Z table to determine yields Given a scenario assess process capability Be able to interpret the Minitab “6pack” capability report for the Normal distribution case Introduction to Concepts Process Capability Review Process capability measures are statistical measures that summarize how much variation there is in a process relative to customer specifications Uses of Process Capability Indices Provides management with a single number to assess the performance of a process. Provides a scale by which processes can be compared. You can state that process X is more capable than process Y if the capability index for process X is greater than the capability index for process Y. Such comparison can help prioritize improvement efforts. Shows over time whether a particular process is better able to meet specifications. The Basic Setup To what degree has the process produced output that meets specifications? Requires a measurement system that performs well and enables us to determine whether the item meets specifications or not. Value of a Capability Focus To increase a process capability, you have to decrease the process variation. Less variation provides Greater predictability in the process, allowing us to make reliable forecasts, meet schedules for orders, etc. Less waste and rework, which lowers costs Products and services that perform better and last longer Happier customers Introduction/Reintroduction to Normal Curve The Normal Curve Context The normal distribution provides the basis for an introduction to process capability Definition A probability distribution where the most frequently occurring value is in the middle and other probabilities tail off symmetrically in both directions.
