Oxford University Press To report orders, requests and advice, we can use reporting verbs plus to-infinitives. to + base form of the verbs e.g.) to run to work Examples: My parents asked me to write to you for some advice because there are hordes of geckos in our home. The boy begged his mum to buy him a pet lizard. He warned us to stay away from the beehive. To report negative orders, requests and advice, we add not before to-infinitives. Examples: ‘Don’t scratch the insect bite!’ Mum said to Jane. (an order) →Mum ordered Jane not to scratch the insect bite. ‘Please don’t forget to use insect repellent,’ I said to Cindy. (a request) →I asked Cindy not to forget to use insect repellent. Examples: ‘Don’t leave food out at night,’ said Uncle Peter. (some advice) →Uncle Peter advised us not to leave food out at night. Examples: ‘Please don’t feed the monkeys,’ said the zookeeper. →The zookeeper warned us not to feed the monkeys. →The zookeeper reminded us not to feed the monkeys. ? ? Make sure that you use the correct reporting verbs. Reporting verbs : Order : tell , forbid , order Request : ask , beg, request Advice: advise, warn , remind Make sure that you use the correct form of the reporting verb when reporting orders, requests and advice. Examples: ‘Please clean your mouse’s cage every few days,’ said Jenny. →Jenny reminds me to clean my mouse’s cage every few days. →Jenny reminded me to clean my mouse’s cage every few days. ? ? Examples: ‘Please buy me a pet snake,’ the boy said to his mother. →The boy begs his mother to buy him a pet snake. →The boy begged his mother to buy him a pet snake. ? ? Don’t leave out to when reporting orders, requests and advice. Make sure you use to-infinitives with reporting verbs. Examples: Ms Lee asked me kill the cockroach on the platform.
