While the painting may be of a mountain, there will be many other elements of nature that invite the viewers to wander in their own imagination through the landscape. Literally translated, the Chinese characters for landscape mean “mountain and water”． Almost all Chinese landscape paintings describe mountains and water, generally a river. The mountains stand for long life; water stands for happiness. When together, mountains and water stand for a long happy life. When placed in a landscape painting, the human form is, in size and perspective, much smaller, and often dwarfed by the images of nature.
