Pictures show table saw and part of hand that was amputated by a table saw. Pictures show a nail gun and hand that had been pierced by nail from nail gun. Pinch points are one of the most common hand hazards. This may include hazards from belts and pulleys, as well as in running nip points from gears or rollers. Pinch points should be guarded. If you see a pinch point that is not guarded, identify it as a safety hazard and make sure it gets fixed! Also, always follow LOTO procedures to ensure equipment is de-energized. Pinch points can also be created when you move an object – either by carrying it or using a hand truck, pallet jack, etc. Always make sure that you have adequate clearance through doors and aisles. Also, if you are removing an object or putting it back, fingers are often exposed to pinch points as you place the object on the ground or try to position it (e.g. re-attaching a guard door and lining up the holes for the bolts). Always do a quick risk prediction before you move or replace an object. Sharp edges are another common hand hazard. Broken or rough edges on equipment or tools may pose hand hazards. New or modified equipment should always be inspected for sharp edges. Obviously, equipment and tools that have broken need to be handled very carefully (inspect, gloves, etc.) There are also more obvious sharp hazards such as protruding nails or saw blades.
