Functional theories assume that societies, groups, and individuals exist as systems and that theses systems try to maintain themselves in a state of equilibrium or homeostasis. Functional theories of communication are considered synchronic, because they emphasize the way systems maintain their identity over time. On the other hand, diachronic theories seek to explain how systems change over time. Functional approach is only one perspective on communication. Introduction System theory are rooted in the biological sciences System theories are based on the premise that the world has a definite structure in which action and operations have discernible meaning. System theories examine groups of things or people that interact with one another in order to form a whole. The interaction is what biologists refer to as ecology, or the relationships which exist among the components of a system and its environment. A world, a society, a family, or a work group could all be considered system.
