Lateral trunk Chest Stretch Strength Training Principles Progressive Resistance Exercise DAPRE Taken from Houglum PA. Therapeutic Exercise for Athletic Injuries Set 1: Lift 50% of total weight x 10 Set 2 Lift 75% x’s 6 Set 3 : lift 100% of weight as many as possible * * PNF First developed by Physical Therapists Maggie Knott Dorothy Voss The most common PNF leg or arm positions encourage flexibility and coordination throughout the limbs entire range of motion. First used with stroke patients, children with CP Today often used for Sports Medicine Safety first Warm up muscles through gentle exercise such as walking, Or external heat: warm packs, whirlpool bath NEVER over stretch The patient is your guide STOP before the patient is in pain Do not force movement PNF Rehabilitation Strengthening Use natural rotation Cross midline Move against resistance if possible Techniques in Strength Training Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation Neurophysiological Basis Autogenic Inhibition Reciprocal Inhibition PNF to increase ROM, strength Use functional movements Diagonal/rotational patterns: move the way the body moves. Example – bring foot to foot to knee Reach arm up to grasp Activity: Look at partner and move in diagonal pattern Arm: Diagonal 1 Arm: Diagonal 2 LEG: Diagional 1 Leg: Diagional 2 Contract- Relax - Stretch 1. Contract /Relax Gently move to end Range of Motion isometrically contract for 7-15 seconds, relaxed for 2-3 seconds immediate passive stretch which stretches the muscle even further than the initial passive stretch. Hold for 10-15 seconds. The muscle is then relaxed for 20 seconds before performing another PNF technique. How to perform a PNF stretch The muscle group to be stretched is positioned so that the muscles are at the soft end of their ROM 1. Contract hamstring muscles 7-15 seconds Push down 2. Relax 2-3 seconds 3. Stretch gently 10-20 seconds Relax 20 seconds before next stretch Contract – Relax - Contract
