Lecture 8 Henry Fielding (1st hour), Tom Jones Oliver Goldsmith (2nd hour), The Vicar of Wakefield Fielding I. Life: Henry Fielding was born in 1707 in the family of a poor retired general. He was educated at Eton and Leyden University. But his family was so poor that he was compelled to leave the University after a year and a half of studies. So he began to support himself from his very youth by writing for the stage and soon became one of the most popular playwrights in London. His dramatic works were mostly comedies. In 1739 appeared The Champion, a newspaper publis
