The Elements of Art Part 2 of a 2-part Series Shape Form Space Essential Questions What are shape, form, and space? How can we use these three elements to improve our photographs? Shape in Art An element of art that is an enclosed space where the boundaries are defined by other elements of art. Shapes are limited to two dimensions: length and width. Shapes can be Geometric, circles, rectangles, squares, triangles or Organic, found in nature. Shape in Photography Geometric: Geometric shapes have bold, defined edges and can create strength and power in a photograph. Shapes in Photography Organic: Organic shapes have soft, fluid edges and can create peace and calmness in a photograph. Form in Art Form: Form is an element of art that is a three-dimensional geometrical figure (sphere, cube, cone, cylinder, prism) Form in Photography Form: Form is basically a three-dimensional shape, and is best accentuated by side lighting since it casts soft shadows. This difference between light and shadows gives a better illustration of the depth of an object. Space in Art Space: An element of art that refers to distances or areas around, between or within components of a piece. Space in Photography Positive: Using positive space in a photograph draws all of the attention to the subject. There will be little empty space around the main focal point. Space in Photography Negative: Using negative space in a picture gives your subject more room to ‘move’ within the image. It creates a sense of openness.
