当代西方“平等”理论探析 弭维 摘要：“平等”是西方历史上，尤其是近代以来最重要的道德价值之一，在当代得到了更进一步的发展。本文拟从道德平等、政治和法律的平等、经济和社会的平等几个方面来简要论述一下“平等”学说，以指出当代平等理念的核心，并指出其存在的理论难点和道德难题。文章在最后指出平等的限度，认为它是一种基本价值，却不是最高的价值。它应该在经济或者福利的基础上强调关切和尊重，同时，平等理念只有成为公民美德的一部分，平等主义者的诉求才真正可能成为现实。 关键词：事实的不平等；道德平等；政治（法律）平等；经济（社会）平等； 公民美德 Abstract: the idea of “equality” had a long history in West and especially became one of the several dominant moral values after modernity rose. Now, the theory of equality in Western world has become more and more confused. In this article, I will start from moral equality, political and legal equality ，economic and social equality to analyze the theory of equality. My purpose is to point out the core and the theoretical and moral dilemma and their complexity of these theories. At the end, I want to give an argument about the limit of equality. The egalitarianism should focus its aim on the political and legal sphere but not others. It should emphasize the care and respect but not the simple gain and lost in the sphere of economics and welfare. Equality is the foundational but not the upmost value. At the same time, I want to express another viewpoint that the demands of egalitarianist will come true when the idea of equality became one of the virtues of citizen. Key words：nequality in reality；oral equality ； olitical(legal)equality ；conomic(social)equality； irtues of citizens “平等”是现代西方最重要的价值观念之一，在法国大革命中与“自由”、“博爱”共同成为革命的口号，并在后来的《人权宣言》中得以体现，随后影响了美国革命乃至整个世界的现代性进程。“平等”理念从反对特权和等级制开始，在几百年里经历了多次变化，并已成为自由主义的价值基础和当今世界上颇具影响力的价值观念。在近代历史中，“平等”观念作为一种革命性力量一直在促进着现实政治、经济状况的改变，具有独特而强大的道德力量。 一、经验事实中的不平等 在开始分析平等时，必将涉及的一个对立面便是“不平等”，也就是差异。从经验意义而言，人在天赋、能力、家庭背景、财产，社会地位等方面都存在诸多差异，这是一种人人可睹的现实。但是这种不平等是描述意义上的，其中尚未含有道德意蕴。和平等密切相关的另外两个概念是“所得”[1]和“分配”，即平等涉及的对象是个体所得，这种所得的对象包含很多，涵盖人在社会中生存所需的诸种要素，如物质利益，精神价值等。这些不同要素的特性不同，也因此给“平等”的实施带来困境，即一些“所得”对象是可以衡量的，即可以从量上形成比较意义的，如财产；而一些则是很难确立比较标准的，如人格平等。因此，确立“所得”的范围并据此确立比较的标准对于平等来说是非常重要的。而分配则是达致平等的途径，即这些可得的“所得”通过怎样的方式分配给社会的每个个人，分配的标准因此具有道德意义，而分配的途径和方式则对社
