Effective Strategies and Plans for Teaching Large Classes
Teaching philosophy – make a commitment to create an active and collaborative learning community
Principles:
Engage students to be active, interdependent and collaborative learners
Implement assessment for learning – conduct formative assessment, classroom assessment and provide students with timely and high quality feedback from instructors and peers etc.
Aim for promoting higher order thinking skills/achieving higher level of learning outcomes
Conduct continuous course evaluation
Adopt outcomes based teaching and learning in the constructive alignment approach
Encourage self-directed and life long learning
Comprehensive approaches for effective large class teaching:
ESTABLISH an active learning community
MANAGE behaviors, space time
DESIGN effective learning activities
IMPLEMENT assessment for learning
MOBILISE the teaching team
UTILISE support resources technologies
Preparation before the term starts:
Teaching team
meet with the teaching team and reach consensus on teaching philosophies, principles, syllabus, ideas, strategies, concerns, schedule, roles and responsibilities etc.
Learning Outcomes
define the learning outcomes that aligned/mapped with the programme outcomes and the university graduate attributes
Teaching and Learning Activities
incorporate active learning strategies to design teaching and learning activities that engage students to participate in learning activities, achieve course outcomes and develop interests in the subjects
Associational brainstorming (is especially good when new ideas or concepts to introduce as it can check out the students’ prior knowledge and experience.)
Think-pair share (make them think and talk!)
Mini-lectures (pause and implement some short writes or CATs to help students to review and organize their learning)
Debates
Group work/activities/assignment (collaboration)
