abstract
This report presents a numerical investigation of the shear behavior of binary mixtures via a twodimensional discrete element method. The effect of the coarse particle content on the peak shear strength of mixtures is investigated for different contact-type friction coef?cients. A detailed analysis on the anisotropies enables us to understand the microscopic mechanisms that result in the dependency of the peak shear strengths on the coarse particle content. The contributions of different contact types to the peak shear strength are quanti?ed. Lastly, the inter-particles structures are examined when the binary mixtures become coarse-particle-supported structures.

1. Introduction
The granular materials that form landslides, debris ?ows, and residual and colluvial soil deposits have distinct structures that consist of mixtures of coarse particles (gravel, rock or sand) and ?ne particles (sand, clay or silt) [1–7]. Coarse particles and ?ne particles have different mechanical and physical proprieties and react differently under internal and external loads, and the relationships between them in mixtures are very dif?cult to discern. Many researchers have conducted laboratory tests and ?eld tests to investigate the complex behaviors of mixtures [3–13]. Researchers have studied the in?uence
