STEP 1 Pre-checking
一.Read and tell the Chinese meanings
mobile phone serious
cause lady fireman

二.According to the answers to write out the questions
1. Yes. I heard about he fire this morning.
2. It happened at 5 p.m..
3. It took place on Shanghai Road.
4. A lady saw it from the window.
5. Luckily, nobody was hurt.
三. Translation
1.数千人在那次地震中丧生。
2.去年秋天在那家工厂发生了一次重大火灾。
3.洪水很可怕。好几百人在那次洪水中丧生。
4.这次地震发生于学校放假期间。
STEP 2 Listen to the tape
Explain that Sandy and Amy are talking about a natural disaster. Invite them to listen to the tape and try to answer the questions.
What are they talking about?
How did it happen?
Was anybody hurt? Why or why not?
With the help of these questions, it will be easier for students to focus on the key information, e.g. in Britain, last week, heavy storm, thunder and lightening, terrible, school caught fire, no one was hurt, students on holiday. They will also help them to organize their own dialogue.
STEP 3 Reading the dialogue again and presentation
Get the students to read the dialogue aloud. Direct the students attention to the intonation of different sentences. We use a rising tone for general questions. We use falling tones for ‘wh-’ questions or statements.
