We use the term visual arts to describe the arts we can see. Painting, sculpture, and architecture have long been the major visual arts in Europe and North America. Today, we include photography, furniture, pottery, jewelry, and many other arts and crafts among the visual arts. Sometimes we speak of the fine arts—other forms of expression that appeal to our sense of beauty and form. This broader category includes literature, music, and dance, in addition to the visual arts. Do you like art ? Which form of art do you like most? Do you like painting? What style of painting do you like most, the western-style painting or the Chinese style painting? Warming up II (3ms) Use the words in “Warming up I” to describe the following pictures and the pictures in our textbook. What were the artists interested in from the 5th to 15th century AD? How did Masaccio paint his paintings? Why did the impressionists have to paint quickly? What were the artists interested in from the 5th to 15th century AD? They were interested in creating respect and love for God. 2. How did Masaccio paint his paintings? He drew things in perspective, which makes pictures very realistic. 3. Why did the impressionists have to paint quickly? Because natural lights change quickly they have to paint quickly. Western art has changed very little over the last seventeen century. Paintings in the Middle Ages did not use perspective. Impressionists painted landscapes.
