unit 3 Father Know Better1
a play is composed of: Characters: people in the play(main and minor; heroes or heroines and cillains) Settings: is the time when and location where the play takes place. Stage directions: are guidelines for performing the play Lines: the words spoken by the characters. Dialogue is an important element in a play because, through the dialogue, the characters tell the audience who they are, where they are and what they want to achieve. Conflicts: Conflict doesn’t mean the characters have to fight each other. It means that they must have opposing, or different, opinions, and it is these opposing opinions that cause the tension that will drive the play’s plot. If all characters in a play think and feel the same way, there will be no conflict, and therefore, no tension. Theme: is the “message” the playwright wishes to pass on to his or her audience. SCENE 1 A tennis match. The crowd sit facing the audience watching the ball go back and forth over the net. Sometimes they “ooh”; sometimes they “aah”. CHRIS and DAVID are playing. Watching in the crowd are CHRIS’S MUM and DAD and his best friends MAE-LIN and JACK. They call out encouragement to CHRIS, but it is obvious he is not playing well. [A point is won, and the crowd applauds.] UMPIRE: Game, set and match, David Martini. [DAVID punches the air in celebration.] JACK: Well played, Chris! MAE-LIN: [rolling her eyes] He lost, Jack. Again. JACK: Er, yes. But not by as much as usual. [CHRIS trudges over to his family and friends.] DAD: Bad luck, Chris. CHRIS: Yeah. Bad luck I ever took up tennis. MUM: Nonsense. You’re improving all the time, dear. MAE-LIN: He’s certainly losing more quickly. [DAVID jogs over, as MUM and DAD exit.] DAVID: Thanks, Chris. It’s amazing how fast two sets go by when only one player can actually play! [DAVID laughs and runs off.] Characters: actors/actress Settings: the time when and location where the play takes place Stage directions: to set up stage properties in the proper place
