Clinical Training Skills - Using Competency-Based Assessment Instruments Using Competency-Based Assessment Instruments Name of presenter Prevention of Postpartum Hemorrhage Initiative (POPPHI) Project PATH Objectives After completing this session, the participant will be able to: Explain how competency-based knowledge assessments are used in clinical training Explain how competency-based skill assessments are used in clinical training Use competency-based knowledge and skill assessment instruments to measure progress in learning and evaluate performance. Terminology Psychomotor domain: The domain or area of learning that often involves performing skills which typically require the manipulation of instruments and equipment (e.g., performing AMTSL) Competency-based skill assessment: An instrument used to objectively measure clinical (psychomotor) skills or other observable behaviors (e.g., counseling) Why Assess Knowledge? Determine learner knowledge of the subject at the beginning of the course (pre-course questionnaire) Motivate the learner to acquire new knowledge Determine whether progress has been made toward achieving the training objectives (midcourse questionnaire) Pre-course Questionnaire Administered before training activities Assesses what learners, individually and as a group, know about the course content Allows the trainer to identify topics that may need more or less time Allows learners to focus on their learning needs Alerts learners to important content Uses a true/false question format Mid-course Questionnaire Administered when learners have completed the self-paced theoretical portion of the course and prior to beginning demonstrations Helps the learner and trainer assess each learner’s progress Uses multiple-choice question format Helps the learner focus on areas that need special attention Evaluates knowledge acquisition Post-course Questionnaire Administered when learners have completed the clinical portion of the course Evaluates knowle
