Mercy Otis Warren was a political writer and propagandist(宣传者) of the American Revolution. In the eighteenth century, topics such as politics and war were thought to be the province of men. Few men and fewer women had the education or training to write about these subjects. Warren was an exception. During the years before the American Revolution, Warren published poems and plays that attacked royal authority in Massachusetts and urged colonists(殖民者) to resist British infringements(侵犯) on colonial rights and liberties.
Introduction of the American Revolution
The American Revolution was a political upheaval(剧变)during the last half of the 18th century in which thirteen colonies in North America joined together to break from the British Empire, combining to become the United States of America.
In July 1776, Thomas Jefferson wrote and the Congress unanimously approved the United States Declaration of Independence,(《独立宣言》)which declaring the independence of the United States.
In 1783, a peace treaty confirmed the new nations complete separation from the British Empire.
