America Britain begins taxing the colonies, e.g. The Sugar Act, 1764 and the Stamp Act, 1765 Angry colonists protest against taxes in the Boston Tea Party British pass new laws to control the colonies, known as the Intolerable Acts Colonies lacked elected representation in Parliament, violating their Rights as Englishmen Sugar Act (April 5, 1764) At the end of the French and Indian war Britain posts 10,000 soldiers in N. America and wants the colonies to help pay for them The colonies in N. America were prohibited from trading with countries other than the British West Indies and had to buy goods, especially sugar, at much higher prices The colonies could only export goods, most importantly lumber, to Britain Economic losses lead to protests in the colonies, especially Boston “It is expedient that new provisions and regulations should be established for improving the revenue of this kingdom…it is just and necessary that a revenue be raised for defraying the expenses of defending, protecting and securing the same.” Stamp Act (1765) Law required that many printed materials include a tax stamp on them Anger at “Taxation without Representation” leads to protests and the first significant joint colonial response to British measures Intimidation tactics and violence meant the tax was never actually collected, and the Act was repealed in 1766 Boston Tea Party (December 16, 1773) Colonists were only allowed to import tea from Britain, which taxed it heavily In many colonies, people refused to allow British ships to unload taxed tea into their ports The governor in Boston refused to allow the ships to leave without unloading their tea, so angry colonists disguised themselves as Native Americans and dumped all t
