Lord Byron George Gordon, Lord Byron (1788-1824) An English poet, born in London, England, Jan. 22, 1788, and died in Missolonghi, Greece, April 19,1824. Lord Byron was perhaps the most fascinating influential literary personality of the Romantic age. An eloquent poet, handsome nobleman political rebel. He was one of the most popular notorious figures of the 19th century. He was born in 1788 with a club–foot and became extremely sensitive about his lameness. He went to Harrow, then to the Trinity College of Cambridge in 1807. In 1809, Byron became a member of the House of Lords. His grand tour to Spain and Greece resulted in Childe Harolds Pilgrimage (1812), an autobiographical work, which made him famous overnight. His life: In 1815, he was married and had a daughter. The unhappy marriage ended next year. In 1816, he left England because of his divorce and the rumors that he had an affair with his half-sister, and never returned. He sailed to Geneva to meet Shelley and other friends, then to Greece to help with the fight again the Turkish, where he got a fever and died in 1824 Byrons life featured aristocratic excesses, huge debts, numerous love affairs, and self-imposed exile. Byron served as a regional leader of Italys revolutionary organization in its struggle against Austria. He later travelled to fight against the Ottoman Empire in the Greek War of Independence, for which Greeks revere him as a national hero. He died from a fever contracted while in Messolonghi in Greece.
