Controlled Economy of China during the Sino-Japanese War Introduction From 1937 to 1945, China has an eight-year war against Japan, called Sino-Japanese war. Since China had already suffered the aggression of western powers for a long time, its domestic economic condition was quite poor. Besides the fact that many cities had been captured by Japan successively made the economy even worse. In view of the specific circumstances at the time, the National Government of the Republic of China carried out controlled economy policy to support the war, satisfy military supplies and citizen demands, and guarantee combat readiness. The National Government introduced various kinds of policies to control the domestic economy which covered almost every aspect of people’s life, including finance control, trade control, price control and material control. This paper is to do a study of the controlled economy of China during the Sino-Japanese War by analyzing its meaning, purpose, and content. This paper includes three parts. The first part is the brief introduction of the general economic background of China during the Sino-Japanese War. The second part will introduce the strategy of the National Government of the Republic of China, which is to implement the controlled economy. This part also discusses the detailed content of the controlled economy. The last part will be the conclusion of this paper.
