The CO2 Indicator signify that the carbon dioxide concentration in the atmosphere is 3% or greater in jar or pouch incubation systems. SUMMARY AND EXPLANATION The stimulatory effect of carbon dioxide on the growth of aerobic and microaerophilic bacteria has been studied extensively.1-7 An aerobic environment enriched with up to 10% carbon dioxide is essential for optimal growth of many Haemophilus spp. and Neisseria spp., as well as Mycobacterium spp. and Streptococcus pneumoniae.7-9 A microaerophilic environment enriched with approximately 5 – 10% carbon dioxide is essential for the growth of Helicobacter spp. and Campylobacter spp.8,9 The disposable CO2 Indicator provide a means for monitoring the production and maintenance of the enriched carbon dioxide atmosphere required for enhanced growth of capnophilic and microaerophilic bacteria. These indicators can be used in the following Becton Dickinson Microbiology Systems products: GasPak 100? system or GasPak 150? system operated with GasPak? Disposable Carbon Dioxide Generator Envelopes or CampyPak? or CampyPak Plus? Envelopes or GasPak CO2 Pouch? or Campy Pouch?; or Bio-Bag? Type Cfj or Bio-Bag? Type C. PRINCIPLES OF THE PROCEDURE In an atmosphere enriched with 3% or greater carbon dioxide, a phenol red indicator solution in the activated device will respond to the drop of pH caused by absorbed carbon dioxide and change from red to yellow in color within 30 min. This indicates proper functioning of the carbon dioxide generating system. At carbon dioxide concentrations of less than 3%, the indicator solution will remain pink to orange in color, indicating impr
