Baylor Elmagco Eddy Current Brake Baylor Brake National Oilwell Baylor Elmagco Eddy Current Brake Maintenance and Repair Introduction Introduction The Baylor Elmagco Eddy Current Brake Not the Dynamic Brake Dynamic Brakes dissipate the motor’s mechanical energy, not the drawworks’ drum mechanical energy, through grid resistors Not the Regenerative Brake Regen Brakes convert motor mechanical energy into electrical energy and resupply it to the bus Not the Band Brake Band Brake works by Friction So what is it? It is used to stop the rotating drawworks drum Doesn’t actually stop the drum Slows it considerably Coupled to the Drawworks with a spline gear Spline gear supplied by the DW manufacturer Shaft size and dimensions the same on each brake Can be decoupled with a lever No Friction surfaces Slows the drum using magnetic forces Completed Brake Course Contents Brake Application and Operation Brake Theory Brake Disassembly Brake Assembly Controllers Brake Maintenance Cooling system Application Slows the Drawworks Drum and Drill String Sometimes, slips can be set without using the Band Brake at all Drill string can be slowed nearly to a stop Cannot be fully stopped by the Eddy Current Brake Rated by the braking weight Actual rating in torque at 50 RPM Operation Driller has up to two controls Driller’s Control (Throttle) Spring Loaded Movable cam with proximity detector Handle and cam are only moving parts Control output is zero (-0.5Vdc) when “fully on” (max braking) Output is (-11VDC) when “off” Default is full braking when throttle fails or is disconnected Adjustments on Firing Board Selector Switch Two Positions Drill is half output (amperage) Trip is full output (amperage) Operation Power limiting Ten minute delay for max kW output Responds to throttle position To prevent overheating Scales current back to approximately 50% Still allows approximately 85% braking torque Can be reset by zeroing control handle Driller’s “trick” that can damage the coils Overheat
