There are a number of methods for deciding on the appropriateness of systemic adjuvant therapy for breast cancer patients. For example, there are several sets of guidelines. In general these guidelines, while helpful, are less than completely satisfying because they do not include estimates of how much benefit is being obtained or given up by selecting a given adjuvant option. Adjuvant! was created in part to address this problem. Adjuvant! integrates patient related information (age, sex, and comorbidity) to make estimates of non-breast cancer related mortality, tumor related information (nodal status, tumor size, histologic grade, estrogen receptor status, and histologic subtype) to project breast cancer related mortality and relapse, and tumor and patient related information (patient age, estrogen receptor status, and treatment type) to make estimates of treatment efficacy. Adjuvant! draws information from Mortality Statistics in the United States, the SEER database, and Meta-analyses and individual clinical trials.
