Output and Sales: Demand for mining and construction machinery and equipment industry from equipment rental and leasing service providers fell in Taiwan in the first three months of 2012, owing to the global downturn and Taiwan’s government commitment to monitoring the housing market. However, demand for components for old equipment increased a great deal. Moreover, manufacturers relied upon domestic suppliers to lower costs and cut imports, maintaining the upward trend in domestic sales. Meanwhile, a reduction in demand for Taiwan-made mining and construction machinery and equipment components from China and ASEAN dragged down the overall industry sales by 1.82 percent year on year to NT$125 million in the first quarter of 2012. However, a pick-up in the industry sales is expected in the second quarter this year. ? Exports: China and ASEAN are the main export markets of the industry. Because of a significant fall in demand from China and ASEAN, exports slid 5.53 percent year on year NT$591 million in during January through March 2012.
