Abstract
The thesis mainly discussed the character of the heroine in Charlotte Bronte’s famous novel “Jane Eyre”, The novel successfully created a new woman image, on the way of seeking the ideal life of happiness, she encountered a series of hardship and frustration and she kept fighting with her fate and never stopped appealing for equality and independence. First in her childhood, she had shown her rebellious spirit. As an orphan, Jane suffered a lot of misery, her aunt’s family members treated cruelly. In Jane’s immature heart, she was unwilling to bear ill treatment she rebelled them bravely. Second, when she studied at Lowood, her rebellious spirit was exposed further. Her view didn’t stay in Mrs. Reeds, instead turned to the whole society. She made hypocrisy of so called charity to be discovered completely. Third, in Jane’s love affair, her thought grew into maturity. Though she loved Rochester passionately, she never lost her dignity and independence for him, when she knew his mad wife still alive, she left him for not becoming his mistress. Her refusal of St. John’s proposal of marriage reflected her requirement of equality and respect. At last she broke traditional morality, and went back to Rochester. Through the analysis of these fighting actions, the article revealed her characters: rebellious and independence.
