Journal of Forensic Identification 524 / 60 (5), 2010 Received November 19, 2009; accepted February 4, 2010 Technical Note Distinguishing Bloodstains from Botanic Stains Using Digital Infrared Photography Rongfeng Xiao Xuezhi Zhao Xiaobin Zhu Lixin Zhang Forensic Medical Examination Center Beijing Public Security Bureau Beijing, China Abstract: Using digital infrared imaging, bloodstains on fabrics can be distinguished from similar looking stains of plant origins. Introduction Bloodstain identification is important at crime scenes involv- ing bloodshed. In some cases, similar looking stains are present from other sources, such as plant materials. Although presump- tive tests are generally utilized, some may offer false positives with botanic sources [1]. Even with different reagent results in color, duration, and intensity [2], the use of presumptive reagents may hinder DNA analysis [3] or alter the appearance of patterns observed. Infrared photography, as with conventional photogra- phy, is noninvasive to the appearance and biological integrity of the stains. In earlier years, infrared photography with special- ized films was used to photograph bloodstains, but this type of Journal of Forensic Identification 60 (5), 2010 \ 525 photography had special operating and handling characteristics that made its use challenging [4, 5]. Digital infrared cameras, both still and video, have been recently used for this purpose, with some limitations in the infrared function [6]. This techni- cal note shows the differences in appearance between blood and botanic stains using infrared photography. Materials and Methods Conventional imaging was conducted with a Canon EOS 5D with a Canon EF 24-105 mm lens. Infrared imaging was done with a Fuji FinePix IS-1 with a 6.2-66.7 mm (equivalent to 28-300 mm on a 35 mm camera) lens and a 760 nm high pass filter. Four various cloth samples were obtained from a textile distributor, as shown in Table 1. Fabric Composi
