Anaphora and ellipses are classified into proper names and common nouns of basic words, compound words, and phrases. 28 queries for which document relevance of data was available, were run in a newspaper database of 55.000 articles. The resolution of ellipses and anaphora was done manually. Resolution was most relevant for person names (both anaphora and ellipses) and other proper name phrases (ellipses) and only marginal in other keyword categories. Recall improvement due to resolution decreased when query exhaustivity grew and was greater in sentence than paragraph searches. Resolution also improved precision in the same keyword categories. The data also suggest that precision improvement decreases as query exhaustivity grows. 1. Introduction In an earlier study (Pirkola J?rvelin, 1996), we studied the recall effect of anaphor and ellipsis resolution on proximity searching in a text database. Our test environment was a full text newspaper article database containing some 55.000 Finnish newspaper articles operated under the TOPIC information retrieval system (Chong, 1989; TOPIC, 1990) allowing Boolean and proximity searching. Anaphora and ellipses were classified in a novel way on the basis of the type of their correlates (or antecedents) rather than, as traditional, on the basis of their own linguistic type.
