An Actor Algebra for Specifying DistributedSystems: the Hurried Philosophers Case Study?Mauro Gaspari and Gianluigi ZavattaroDepartment of Computer Science, University of BolognaMura Anteo Zamboni 7, 40127 Bologna, ItalyE-mail: fgaspari,zavattarg@cs.unibo.itAbstract. In this paper, we introduce an actor language following a\process algebra notation. The idea is to de ne a formalism based on astandard process algebraic approach which provides basic object-orientedfeatures, such as object identity, asynchronous message passing, implicitmessage acceptance and dynamic object creation. This approach allowsus to reuse standard results of the theory of concurrency in a contextwhere an high level object oriented speci cation style is preserved. To il-lustrate the expressive power of our formalism, we provide a speci cationof the Hurried Philosophers case study.1 IntroductionThe object-oriented research community developed techniques, tools, and envi-ronments that have been applied to several software development projects inthe context of a wide range of application domains. In particular, distributedobject-oriented programming is one of the most promising candidate paradigmsto build large scale distributed systems. OMG the Object Management Groupconsortium, CORBA [22] the object-oriented standard for integrating applica-tions running in heterogeneous distributed environments developed by OMG,and Java [7], the new internet language developed by Sun Microsystems, are allexamples of such e orts.On the other hand, most of the theoretical computer science e orts in thetheory of concurrency are oriented to study process algebras such as CCS [16]or the -calculus [17] which do not provide a direct representation of objectsas rst class entities. In these formalisms processes are stateless entities whichcommunicate exploiting synchronous message passing and the representation ofan object involves a large number of processes [23].As a consequence of this situation there is a big gap
