in praise of consumerism

Members:汪丽,冉霞,孙珂,吴丽珍 Tenured:adj, (of a person, especially a teacher at a university) having the right to keep their job permanently. example:a tenured professor(终身教授) disposable:adj, available for use(可自由支配的) example: disposable resources high-cult: adj very popular with a particular group of people (受特定人群欢迎的) example: The singer has become a high-cult figure in America. pass off: ( of an event ) to take place and be completed in a particular way(以某方式)发生并完成 example:The demonstration passed off peacefully. self-evident: adj obvious and needing no further proof or explanation(显而易见的) example: The dangers of such action are self-evident The academy has forced some people (at least for me) to accept that idea successfully, which it is obvious about human nature: all of us like having possessions. * I think that much of our current refusal to consider the liberating role of consumption is the result of who has been doing the describing. Since the 1960s, the primary “readers” of the commercial “text” have been the well-tended and tenured members of the academy. For any number of reasons – the most obvious being their low levels of disposable income, average age, and gender, and the fact that these critics are selling a competing product, high-cult (which is also coated with its own dream values) the academy has casually passed off as “ hegemonic brainwashing” what seems to me, at least, a self-evident truth about human nature: We like having stuff. How do you paraphrase this sentence? *
