Oliver Twist is One of Dickens’ most popular stories. The author who himself was born in a poor family wrote this novel in his twenties with a view to reveal the ugly masks of those cruel criminals and to expose the horror and violence hidden underneath the narrow and dirty streets in London. The main role of this novel，Oliver Twist, was born in a workhouse. His mother was unknown to others and himself, so he became an orphan when he came to the world and was thrown into a world full of poverty and crime. It was the tragic of that time that all of the homeless children had to be sent the workhouse and they began their endless life. And Oliver was one of them. Living in the workhouse, he was treated badly by the people there, in particular by Bumble, a parish council official. He suffered enormous pain, such as hunger, thirst, beating and abuse. Though he appeared to be humble and docile in everything, he wouldn’t bear the abuse on his mother. When another child said something bad about his mother, he became furious and taught him a lesson by his fists and arms.
