DiscussionBackground information (10 min)Manners are the standards of conduct which show the actor to be cultured, polite, and refined. They are like laws in that they codify a set of standards for human behavior; yet they are unlike laws in that there is no formal system for punishing misbehavior. They are a kind of norm. What is considered “mannerly” is highly subject to change in time, geographical location, social class, occasion, and other factors. Manners matter so much that many books have been written on the subject, advice columns frequently deal with questions on mannerly behavior, and that schools have occurred for the sole purpose of teaching manners.
