In the design and construction of tunnel engineering aspect, the principle of New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM) is widely spread and development. In this paper, according to the application of NATM in China, through reading lots of literature and analysis of engineering example. Elaborated the classification of soft surrounding rock and deformation force mechanism and the basic factors affecting the soft surrounding rock deformation. Discusses the application of concept and method of NATM in soft rock. Article summarize the NATM principle and problems and countermeasures should be noted in the soft rock tunnel design and construction. Introduced construction method and support way in applying the principle of NATM excavation in soft rock tunnel, and lists two tunnel construction related examples. The application results show that the method in the paper has strong applicability and the scope of application is wide, has good application effect. And can effectively control soft surrounding rock deformation and ground depression. Achieved good economic benefits and strictly control time limit for the project.
