第5单元辅导(1) More practice with the video video 5 Shops and a Community Leisure Education Centre Focus questions for text 1 How many different sorts of shop do we talk about? Text 1 In the 19th century Britain was known as a nation of shopkeepers, and in the 20th century one of our best-known prime ministers - Margaret Thatcher - came from a family of shopkeepers. The old shop system was simple: a village or town would have a high street and there you would find all the different shops that you needed - the butcher’s, the baker’s, the candle-stick makers as the old nursery rhyme says. Other kinds of cheap marketing were always available in street markets like this one. You will notice that the stallholders all shout to the public to advertise what they are selling. They are crying their wares to use an old expression. These developments all maintained the centre of the town as the shopping centre. However, in recent times another development has taken place: out-of-town shopping in huge warehouses which are sometimes called hypermarkets - that is, even bigge
